Arena parkrun series: Race 2 – Hove Prom

Arena parkrun series: Race 2 – Hove Prom
Well here we are. With the majority of spring marathons complete, attentions are starting to switch back to some shorter stuff for the summer (if it ever actually bloomin’ arrives!). The second race of the parkrun series therefore could not have been timed better.
The course as we know is a 2 lapper on the seafront, is pan flat, and if conditions are not too windy, red-hot for some fast times. Everybody wants to get lucky at the prom right?
This race was a position scoring event, and therefore the higher up the pack you finish the lower the amount of points you get. Add to that the availability of bonus points for breaking Arena records and parkrun’s own age category records, then there was much to play for.
As was the case with the first event at Preston Park, the event was largely dominated by the club with a fantastic 71 members running and remembering their barcode. How many of those turned up due to the promise of free ice cream I don’t know, but only a handful of us injured folk flaked out and cheered from the side-lines, and with Georgia Steers race directing there was involvement on the organisation front too. Great work all.
Once again my wife forgot her barcode and vest (I think she does this just to pee me off) so she has been banished from the results and is currently residing in the dog house in Silvester Towers.
The best thing for me though was how many people mentioned to me that events like these where inter club rivalries and friendships allow them to push on that little bit extra and produce a PB, so I thought I’d check to see if the stats backed that up…
Firstly, 46% of you produced a PB for the course! That’s almost 1 in 2 of you. It does include the 4 first timers in that count, but still, that’s a big number.
Another big number (well not that big really) is 3! And as well as being magic, also signifies the number of Arena records smashed that morning. An even slightly less big, but again important, number is 2. That is the number of parkrun age category records broken at the race. More to come on these amazing performances…
So on to the race itself. It was the usual fast start and Richard Clayton right up the front with Timmy tucking in just behind with a couple of other non-Arenas. However the field soon started to get strung out and it wasn’t long until it was just Rich and a chap from London (I’m assuming based on his T-shirt).
Behind them, there were several groups forming with many Arenas close to or running with their team mates. Aled, Dan, Henry, Dave and Teo were all very close together for the men, but running along them was the ever awesome Tara making it look easy.
Next up were the likes of Jim, Andrew and TJ for the men, and Dani Tarleton and Andy Paterson for the ladies. However it was slightly further back that some of the performances of the day were occurring.
Caroline Wood was in amazing form and chiselled a massive 1 minute 44 seconds off Jenny Hughes’ record to bring the VW55-59 record down to a fantastic 19:32. She also now tops the age graded records with 91.47% and therefore gets two bonus point deductions. With Mark Stephenson making his comeback from injury in this race also, the Wood / Stephenson household would justifiably be on cloud 9 this weekend.
Then Paul, who was running like he had left the GassOn, smashed his own Prom Age Grading record of 83.10% with an amazing 83.22% and time of 19:58, the first time for a while he has gotten back under 20 minutes. Top work fella, enjoy that bonus point.
The other age category record to be broken was the VW60-64 record where again it was again an Arena 80 athlete being replaced by another. Nicky Yeates much preferred these conditions to the horrendous Boston Marathon storm, and proved as much by chipping 4 seconds off the record held by the legend Chris Naylor to post the time of 21:39 and a bonus point deduction. In addition, she improved her age grading to 88.65%!
Many other PB’s were smashed on the day, too many to write about individually, but a full list can be found in the appendix, so please do read till the end and congratulate yourselves on your amazing runs.
However, back to the front of the field, and Rich had positioned himself at the front again by the final turn and powered on the last 500m up to the finish to come agonisingly close to dipping under 16 minutes. Alas, the official time of 16:01 was given, which is still a massive PB and it’s only a matter of time before he dips under and beyond. Fantastic work, RICHly deserved dude. Reward yourself with 1 point for winning, then immediately take that off for achieving the Fastest Hove Prom time club record (and 3rd in age graded). From hero to zero!
For the ladies Tara dug in for the final sprint to the line and came over in an equally awesome 18:17, to smash her PB, and move herself up to 3rd in the overall prom club records, and up to 3rd in age graded records. Fantastic work Tara, you also get the 1 point for winning, but no bonus deductions this time I’m afraid.
Wow, I hear your brains say silently inside your skulls, all that is utterly incredible. You’ve really whetted my appetite for big stats, feed me more! Ok then, I will, digest this little nugget…
Arena again had 4 men in the top 10 and 11 in the top 20. Whereas the women had 8 in the top 10 and 16 in the top 20. For the fraction of you out there who love percentage stats, that’s 55% of the top 20 made up by the men and 80% made up by women, Incredible!
To see how you ranked in the time based results for this race, see the charts below:

In terms of the series overall scores, the tables are looking like this, with Caroline Wood tying for the lead with Tara for the ladies, with Nicky and Juliette in third. Then for the men, Rich is leading Timmy by 3 points, with Dave R and Dan V further back on 12. All still to play for:

Well done again everybody, brilliant running. The next race in the parkrun series is Worthing on June 16th, which goes back to being an age grading race. In the meantime, take care of yourselves….and each other.
Much love Al
