January 20 saw the Masters Cross Country championships at Coombs Farm taking place on a cold and windy day so ideal cross country conditions! The challenging course, expertly plotted and marked by our own Caroline and Mark S, featured a route with 200m of elevation in just under 8km, and both men and women covered the same distance, much to our delight.
Captain Katie Wright’s winning medals
In the first race, the Over 50s championship, four men represented – Jim Watson, Steve Howard, Jonathan Pickworth, and Michael Miller. The race was fiercely competitive, showcasing impressive times and fantastic sprint finishes down the wide, sweeping final hill.
The Women’s race followed, with two teams entered. In the W35 age group, the team of Anna Hinks, Katie Wright, and Caroline Hoyte (who ran down in AG) claimed the silver medal in the team championship. Caroline also impressively secured bronze in the individual W45 championship event.
In the W45 age group, Kirsty Parker and Juliet Fine ran well in the individual race, which is known for its fierce competition and often sees an overall race winner.
Moving on to the W55, Arena 80 excelled. The team of Caroline Wood, Jenny Hughes, and Yvonne Patrick (running down in AG) claimed the gold medal in the team championship. Caroline also took the individual age group gold in the W55, while Yvonne won the W65 age group.
Caroline Wood & Jenny Hughes with their winning medals
We had one man representing in the M35-49 age group. Congratulations to Gareth Williams! It would be nice to get a team to run with Gareth in the M40 age group next year.
A big thank you goes to Laura, Rob, Paul, Mark S, and Bob for making the event a reality. Without their contributions in volunteer/official roles, these events would not be possible. Additionally, gratitude to Kate Matthews and Sussex Athletics for organizing a truly lovely event.
