Get to Know…Angelina Smy
This week we are joined by the exotic looking Ms Smy. For those that have seen the rise and rise of Angelina’s running this year will all agree that she has tremendous determination when it comes to running. She has achieved ten PB’s at Preston Park parkrun this year alone as well as numerous more in various races she has appeared in also. She has been a permanent fixture in the top 5 of the Super Series challenge through out the 14 races so far in the accumulative points section so there is no doubt this has been a fine racing season for her. A gentle mannered lady and an absolute pleasure to know so let’s find out what Angelina is all about.
Name: Angelina Smy
1. When and why did you join Arena:
I first joined in January 2013 (although as I had to move away from Brighton for a bit at the end of that year it is probably only since early 2015 that people think I joined)! At the time I wanted to join a club to keep me motivated and keep me running regularly as I need structure and Monday night track nights worked really well for me. I really appreciated the support and encouragement that I received from everyone as an improving runner and I really do feel that it is because of Arena that I seem to have improved quite a lot since I joined!
2. How long have you been running:
Only a couple of years before I joined Arena.
3. Where did you grow up:
Felixstowe in Suffolk. Not too far from Al Silverster as I discovered from his Get to Know!
4. What was your first thought when you woke up this morning:
How is that the time already?!
5. What do you do for fun:
Eat! I’ve been told I can eat a lot for my size. Other than that spending time on/near the beach on a nice day, yoga, visiting my school and uni friends, (many of whom seem to have moved across the country if not the world!) and generally seeing or trying out new things.
6. Is social media a good thing or a bad thing:
Ha ha – I know why you asked me this because it’s difficult to find me on various social media platforms as I don’t always use my full name! I just don’t think my life is that interesting and because I’ve got quite a unique name if I used it you could actually find me quite easily online which freaks me out a bit! I do think it’s a good thing because you can keep in touch with friends and family all over the world so much more easily than you ever could before and can find anything out in an instant.
7. If you could only have one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be:
This is really difficult! Either a really good selection of French bread, cheese and wine or whatever I could get from a sushi belt.
8. What are the three most used apps on your phone:
Really boring ones: – Google Maps, Google Calendar, Twitter (following – not posting!)
9. Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 18, and find line 4:
[It’s a book of photography so not technically line 4 – but this is what is on page 18]: “Facing a small amount of confrontation when a problem is in its infancy will save a large amount of confrontation when the problem is fully grown.” from Going out on a Monday by Gill Copeland
10. Without looking, guess what time it is and how close were you:
2pm – it’s 14.17.
11. Have you ever had or do you have a nickname:
In my last job it was “Ballerina” (I have a feeling in my current job I am still called that – just not to my face! 🙂 ) some of my close friends call me “Ag”, but I am mostly an Ange. I do answer to most things…
12. What makes you happy:
Spending time with friends and family, travelling, running, sunshine, eating!
13. What was the last film you watched:
Bridget Jones’s Baby
14. What type of music do you listen to the most:
Recently I seem to be listening mostly to Absolute Radio 90s, Juice Brighton or Discover Weekly on Spotify.
15. Tell us something we don’t know about you:
I am half Filipina.
16. What would be a great night out for you:
Good company, good food, good music and when something really random happens!
17. Have you ever won anything:
A trophy for the best serve in tennis when I was about 9!
18. What was the first song you ever purchased:
It must have been something like “Love Me for a Reason” by Boyzone…!
19. What was the last thing you bought:
A cappuccino and a peanut butter brownie from the Chalet Cafe at Preston Park
20. Do you have any superstitions:
I don’t think so…
Our biggest thanks to Ange for her Q&A’s this week and we hope that you have now got to know Angelina Ballerina a little better. Check back next Wednesday for another set of Q&A’s with our chosen club member.
